Ever heard of the 7 – 11 rule? Research shows that within the first 7 seconds, people will form 11 opinions of something. And who can blame us?!

In a world where we’re constantly bombarded with information, our brains have to form opinions at lightning speed to help us decide if something is worth spending time on, or if we should move on to the next thing.

So, when you’re battling for your employees’ attention, how do you make sure your internal communications are heard? Let’s find out:

What’s in it for them?

Not every employee has a vested interest in the company they work for. So, whether you’re communicating a policy, sharing company news, recognising an achievement, or delivering training, it’s important to put yourself in your employees’ shoes. Ask yourself, do they need to know this? If the answer is yes, make it relevant, worthwhile and engaging.

Shape your content

Internal communication can take many forms. From the more traditional emailers and company booklets, to webinars, social media, peer reviews and all hands meetings.

Of course, not all types of information can be communicated in every way. But finding different ways to deliver information will ensure you meet the needs of a diverse workforce.

Keep it simple

As Glenn Grayson explained in his recent In Talks With Endorphin video, there’s no need to overcomplicate messages to your team!

Prioritise information and stick to the key points, knowing full well that your employees might switch off after the first few lines of an email or minute of a video. So get the important information in there first!

Tell a story

It’s a fact that people buy from people. So whatever it is you want to convey, make it relatable. This usually means sharing the story or context around the information you’re delivering.

Be genuine

This brings us nicely on to our final point, cut the corporate c**p!

Yes, it’s important to keep the messaging appropriate to your business. But if your communication feels disingenuous, or is full of jargon and corporate speak, your employees are guaranteed to switch off.
